Compassionate Sleep Support is the central theme of my work with parents, and it is at the heart of Ready, Set, Sleep. My sleep philosophy combines my strong belief in emotionally-attuned parenting and my background in practical, fact-based health journalism. Modern parents need and want sleep information that meshes with their parenting style and delivers results, and I’m pleased to deliver just that with Ready, Set, Sleep and the Compassionate Sleep Support Group.
What is Compassionate Sleep Support? I’m glad you asked. Here are the key aspects of my approach to sleep.
Compassionate Sleep Support means providing your child with the sleep support he needs—no less, and no more (psychologists call this “scaffolding”).
It means staying attuned to the sleep support she needs at that moment, and being flexible enough to recognize that sleep independence often ebbs and flows.
It means making sure your child knows that he can always—always—count on you to be there for him if he needs you at night.
It means gently building her sleeping skills with the goal of independent sleep—keeping in mind that some children will get there sooner than others, and that’s OK.
It means understanding that sleep is as important to your child’s healthy development as good nutrition and exercise, and fighting like a parent to protect his right to healthy rest.
It means being compassionate with yourself, an exhausted, loving, imperfect parent, and getting the support you need so that you can better support your child.
It means embracing a comprehensive approach to sleep that respects the sleep needs of everyone in the family, and recognizing the fact that families are closely connected systems of working parts. When the health of one family member suffers, the family suffers. And when one member of the family improves their well-being with better sleep, all ships rise.
